"Speed" (raggedrides)

A GT500 post earlier gave me an itch to search Autotrader.com for other Shelbys, Hellcats, ZL1's and Z/28's. This one was priced the lowest, but I couldn’t help but notice how narrow the tires looked.
Even worse than I thought... This Z/28 is rolling on Nankangs.
I’m guessing it came in on toasted Trofeos and the dealer slapped the cheapest rubber they could to get it out the door.

Tires isn’t something I’d ever really thought about when buying a car until after I got my 3. It turned out to be fine, but still one of the things I will look into before making another purchase.

If something happened to the mill and these guys got ahold of it, they’d probably swap in a 4.8 and send it.

Methinks you are right. OEM rubber can’t be cheap. I wonder if those are speed rated high enough.

If I was buying a Daewoo, Nankang it up, but something like this or your M3? HELL NAW unless it’s going cheap enough for me to budget new rubber.

The Pirelli Trofeo R’s are nuts and the treadwear is atrocious. If I owned one I’d go with steel rotors in place of the carbons and trade out the Trofeos for Michelin Pilot Super Sport. They’re also expensive, but at least they’ll last awhile on the street.

A 1.4 from the Sonic RS would be hilarious. Drive everywhere at 75% pedal down.

Might be the wheels too. If I recall correctly, the wheels and tires stuck out way further than that on a stock one. To me it points to something fishier. Maybe it’s nothing, but expensive cars with cheap owners is never a good combo.

This
reminded me
that my 650 came with junk Dunlop 222's from the factory, god they were a horrible tire and were going to last forever.

that black part sticking out is a fender extension, you have to have it with the splitter. the wheels do look off as stock units were glossy and had bowtie or Z28 center caps

Yeah, the OEM tires on this are so soft, they make 200TW autocross tires look like 80,000 mile all seasons. It's a big reason this thing was able to put up the track times it did.

Absolutely eagle eyed observation here. I was so focused on the tires I missed that entirely. There’s also the “Z28” engraved near the lip on the right side. Definitely not OEM. I wonder if the originals were damaged or stolen.

that looks absolutely delicious. I think you’re right. It has those black splitter things, but just below them you can see the wheels would be flush with the flares or barely sticking out.

Why do the wheels look like knockoffs too?
The Z/28 came with some of the best OEM wheels ever made in my opinion and for some reason they look like knockoffs in those pics, but might just be the tires making them look weird combined with the picture being not as sharp as it could be.

I’ve had a few sets like that. They’re like vampires. They suck and live forever.

Bridgestone Potenzas, which I ended up detesting. I’ve got Michelin PS4s on now.

Completely agree, I’ve lucked out with my car purchases, but it’s one thing I will look at next time.

I roll around with PS4S on my M3 as well. It came with P Zeros, then I put PSSs on, then I needed new tires and went with PS4S but I was cross shopping the Potenzas.
I honestly thought they put like Federals or some like sub-$100 a tire on the car or something lol

I think if the dealer put Pilot Super Sports on it, people wouldn’t care. That is a somewhat competitive tire and not some cheap garbage like the Nankangs.
